Rwanda-Seychelles: Cooperation in correctional matters

The agreement was signed this Monday in Kigali between the Commissioner General of Rwanda’s Correctional Service, CG Evariste Murenzi, and the Director of the Seychelles Prison Service, Janet Georges, who is on a working visit to Rwanda.
The agreement covers staff training, research and other areas of the correctional service.
The Director of the Seychelles Prison Service, Janet Georges, is conducting this reciprocal assessment visit following the one conducted last February by CG Evariste Murenzi to the Seychelles Prison Service. The purpose of the visit is to draw conclusions on the Memorandum of Understanding initiated between the Seychelles Prison Service and the Rwandan Correctional Service.

The delegation will also assess the possibility of having exchange programs on the training of prison officers as requested during the visit of the Commissioner General of the Rwandan Correctional Service Evariste Murenzi in February 2025.
It is also expected that an exchange and updates on the sophisticated programs and standards of penal and correctional facilities will be agreed upon, as well as the support requested by Seychelles for the security of its penal institutions through the Rwandan prison administration.
Following the signing ceremony of this cooperation agreement, the two heads of correctional services held discussions that focused on areas of mutual interest for both institutions. These include collaboration in the security operations of their penitentiary facilities, rehabilitation and reintegration programs, training and capacity building, and many others.

Rwanda and Seychelles maintain very good cooperative relations in various fields.
These agreements were formalized, notably during the visit of Rwandan Head of State Paul Kagame to the Seychelles from June 28 to July 1, 2023. Six memoranda of understanding were signed at that time.
Furthermore, on 11 August 2024, the President of the Republic of Seychelles attended the inauguration ceremony of the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.
